Longhorns fans need to get used to the gesture Horns down as the school moves to the SEC. The gesture has been a moniker for the school’s rivals to mock the school for celebrating a big score or win. It’s in our best interest to change that emotion of being upset and use it in our favor.
As our own Rob Babers has said on this station, when someone flashes Horns down, it shows that we’re in your head. Once you see it, the proper reaction is to give a reason not to do it again by scoring with a purpose in retaliation to the gesture. After a loss, the intent should be to make an opponent pay for their action with a blowout.
Recently, after a loss to Central Florida, Coach Rodney Terry reacted in the way that we are used to after the victory Knights’ upset 77-71 victory over the Longhorns. During the post-game line handshake, some players flashed Horns down at the Longhorn players. Although it was a sign of disrespect, it wasn’t a calculated move to call the players “classless.” Coach Terry apologized for his reaction to UCF’s head coach, Johnny Dawkins, and the Knights fanbase and said that Coach Dawkins is a very close friend of his.
Next year, expect to see every SEC school in sports to flash Horns down. Instead of getting too upset, I suggest our school react with, “we’re live rent-free in your head.”
